This week we learned about ancient Egypt. It all started with borrowing a DVD about mummies at the library. We watched it together and the kids had so many questions afterwards that we looked for information about the country, its pyramids and pharaohs and - of course - mummies. I found a book for kids explaining ancient egypt in which we read every once in a while as well as a novel about three kids travelling in time, going back to the time pharaoh Tutanchamun lived. This mystery story is based around the history of Tutanchamuns time and both kids found it exciting. We also worked with a booklet with hieroglyphics stamps in it and wrote words with the stamps included in the package. The picture in the middle shows the collages we worked on for several days. It is surprising how much the kids remember of all that information on the subject by just plainly WANTING to know about it! Combining learning with a fun time and with fun activity is worth so much as well as it does matter to give them information at the very time they ask for it!

Wir haben uns in dieser Woche mit dem alten Ägypten beschäftigt. Alles fing mit dem Ausleihen einer DVD über Mumien an. Die haben wir uns zusammen angesehen. Danach hatten die Kinder so viele Fragen zum Thema dass wir Informationen zusammengesucht haben.... über Ägypten, die Pyramiden und Pharaonen und natürlich über Mumien. Ich habe zwei Bücher für die Kinder gefunden, in einem wird Ägypten anhand von Fragen zum Thema erklärt, das andere ist ein Kriminalroman der zur Zeit Tutanchamuns spielt. Außerdem hatten die Kinder viel Spass mit den Hieroglyphenstempeln samt Legende. Auf dem mittleren Bild seht ihr unsere Collagen zum Thema. Es erstaunt mich immer wieder wieviel die Kinder sich merken zu Themen an denen sie von sich aus interessiert sind. Ich merke immer wieder, wie viel Sinn es macht, den Kindern mit den Kindern genau die Themen zu bearbeiten für die sie sich gerade in diesem Moment interessieren.
